About Us

Sistema Cyprus is an El Sistema inspired program which aims to provide all children and young people with free music education through orchestras and choirs. The second aim is to promote respect and recognition of vulnerable population groups from the society. Sistema Cyprus operates in the area of Faneromeni in Nicosia, in the “Home of Hope” (Hope for Children CRC Policy Centre) and in the area of Faneromeni in Larnaca, providing more than 100 children and young people with free instruments and lessons.

Let the Children Dream

Sistema Cyprus presents the concert: Let the Children Dream, on Sunday, March 22^nd at 4 p.m. at the Nicosia Municipal Theater. The concert is under the auspices of the Municipality of Nicosia.

The music event will feature the Sistema Cyprus Orchestra and Choir and the Cyprus Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Santiago Ossa Alzate. The 100 children of Sistema Cyprus and 20 Cyprus Chamber Orchestra professional musicians will perform an unforgettable concert through songs such as the Arabic poem Lamma Bada, the popular traditional Roma Ederlezi song, and the classical William Tell Overture, Apollo Suite Dance, as well as Latin songs like Merengue and Cumbia.

Sistema Cyprus Call for artistic director and conductor

Santiago Ossa Alzate, New Artistic Director of Sistema Cyprus

Sistema Cyprus is happy to announce that our new Aristic Director and Conductor is Mr. Santiago Ossa Alzate from Colombia.

Santiago Ossa Alzate is a young conductor born in Colombia with conducting studies at EAFIT University under the chair of the conductor Cecilia Espinosa. At the age of 12 he joined the "La Red de Escuelas de Música de Medellín", an El Sistema inspired programme in his hometown, where he received trumpet, choir and conducting classes. As a trumpeter he joined the Amadeus Youth Symphony Orchestra. Later, Santiago had the opportunity to travel to Venezuela and to receive classes at the Barquisimeto Conservatory of "El Sistema".

During 2017-2018 he acted as an Assistant Conductor in the same institution. During this time, he has conducted different national orchestras in Colombia, such as the State of Caldas Symphony Orchestra and EAFIT Symphony Orchestra. Santiago has represented Colombia's First IBERORQUESTAS Symphony Orchestral Conducting Workshop in Montevideo Uruguay. He was also the assistant director of the 2018 version of "La semana de Las cuerdas”. In 2019, Santiago moved to Madrid, Spain, where he joined the "Fundación Acción Social por la Música” by teaching, conducting and volunteering.

'Sistema in Concert' for the World Refugee Day 2019

On June 12th, 2019, in a crowded Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation’s Open Air Theatre in Faneromeni, Nicosia, Sistema Cyprus and the Windcraft Junior band proved that music knows no boundaries.

'Sistema in Concert' was organized under the auspices of the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus as part of its activities on the occasion of this World Refugee Day. With the slogan “Join us and take a step #WithRefugees” the concert sent a ‘loud musical’ message calling for the respect, acceptance and integration of refugees into the new societies. The orchestra, under the artistic and musical direction of Petros Stylianou, took the audience on a musical journey through rhythms and melodies from around the world and especially from Latin America.

ΜΠΕΣ ΣΤΟ ΡΥΘΜΟ!

Στον ρυθμό έβαλαν η Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα Κύπρου και τα παιδιά του Sistema Cyprus το κοινό, ενώνοντας τις δυνάμεις τους με μια διπλή συναυλία στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο Στροβόλου, το Σάββατο 9 Μαρτίου. Φιλοξενούμενος μαέστρος της εκδήλωσης ήταν ο Gerardo Estrada Martinez που παρέσυρε κοινό και μουσικούς στον ρυθμό του.

Την παράσταση έκλεψαν τα παιδιά του Sistema Cyprus τα οποία εισέπραξαν το πιο ζεστό χειροκρότημα του κοινού, με το που έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους στη σκηνή. Με το τέλος των παραστάσεων, δέχτηκαν επίσης την απόλυτη αποθέωση από τους θεατές, που τους χάρισαν ένα τεταμένο δυνατό χειροκρότημα. Δέστε απόσπασμα από την βραδιά στον πιο κάτω σύνδεσμο.
